Conflict Resolution
The program is designed to prevent the emergence of conflict. This is secured through a broad collaborative environment and a mentoring relationship that involves not only the mentoring triangle, but also other faculty members. Continuous reports during doctoral seminars by the PhD students provide for an early warning mechanism to prevent a breakdown of the relationship with the mentors. In particular, regular semester retreats are seen as a format that, besides the discussion of research-related topics, enables the timely reflection of potential disagreements. In case of conflicts between the mentor(s) and the PhD student, first the coordinator of the doctoral program (or the deputy, if the coordinator is the mentor) informally mediate. If this does not resolve the dispute, a mediation process is started. If an agreement cannot be reached, a conflict resolution body will be formed. It consists of the program speaker and one person nominated by each of the conflict parties and accepted by the other party. The mediation body will prepare suggested solutions to be accepted or declined by the faculty after hearing the positions of both parties. In case of prolonged difficulties, the faculty will consult the relevant dean or the rector and follow the relevant standard university procedures.
